Background

Baden-Württemberg is recognized nationwide as an outstanding hub for innovative, climate-neutral, and digital construction of the future. Thanks to an excellent research landscape, a strong construction and real estate sector, and well-established knowledge transfer and networking structures, a regional construction ecosystem has emerged in Baden-Württemberg. This ecosystem fosters collaboration across the entire value chain, from construction research to practical implementation.

From an economic policy perspective, a strong construction ecosystem is essential—one that represents the full spectrum of stakeholders and identifies further growth potential through networking with the scientific community to develop and implement new innovative ideas. This requires a precise understanding of the structure and performance of the construction ecosystem in Baden-Württemberg, the key challenges and requirements for the future of construction, as well as emerging potential.

 

Goal

The study aims to establish a solid scientific database on the current state of the building ecosystem in Baden-Württemberg and its ability to meet future challenges regarding competitiveness, innovation capacity, and sustainability. In this context, the topic of cost-efficient construction will also be considered.

With a focus on the current and future requirements for planning and construction, the study will identify opportunities for Baden-Württemberg as a location, also in comparison to other relevant regions. It will define potentials for further development and identify possible gaps.

The study is intended as a foundational study to strengthen and advance the building ecosystem in Baden-Württemberg.

 

Role of Fraunhofer IRB

• Assessment of the Building Ecosystem in Baden-Württemberg:
  • Analysis of the structure and specific characteristics of the stakeholder landscape in Baden-Württemberg
  • Evaluation of economic performance and macroeconomic significance
• Identification of future challenges and requirements for the building ecosystem in Baden-Württemberg
• Synthesis of results into a comprehensive study, and derivation of recommendations for action.
