Ongoing project
Background
Humanity is destroying the ecosystems of our oceans and coasts on an unprecedented scale. This destruction not only has direct catastrophic effects on humans and nature in the respective seas and coastal regions, but also on the global ecosystem and thus on the survival of all humankind.
Even though much of the man-made damage is irreversible, the EU's Restore Our Ocean and Waters by 2030 mission aims to restore the health of our oceans and waters where possible and to protect them in the future. The focus is on biodiversity, eliminating pollution and creating a carbon-neutral and circular blue economy.
Particularly important projects, so-called lighthouses, are already being implemented in four major European marine and river basins. The first phase of the EU mission (2021-2025) will identify potential solutions of these local lighthouse projects, which will be extended and transferred to the whole EU in the second phase (2026-2030).
The objective of the BlueMissionAA project is to coordinate and support the European Commission mission projects that aim to restore and protect marine ecosystems in the Atlantic and Arctic.
Goal
In pursuing this goal, the focus is on the involvement, cooperation, participation and empowerment of the directly affected local population. The consistent involvement of the people living in the affected coastal regions is an important factor for the necessary, sustainable improvement of the marine ecosystems and living conditions of the affected population.
Sustainability (SDG), responsibility and ethics (RRI) are the cornerstones of all research, development and innovation. This is particularly important in the field of coastal restoration because so many people are directly affected. To ensure that the solutions and processes developed comply with applicable ethical standards, a holistic framework for analysing and assessing compliance with these standards is required.
Role of Fraunhofer IRB
Fraunhofer IRB will lead the task T5.3. In this task we will develop a holistic assessment framework for measuring responsibility, sustainability, knowledge transfer, social impact and ethics that includes the following aspects: (a) Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) assessment framework for innovation processes; (b) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) assessment framework for systems, products and solutions; (c) Social Impact assessment framework for the entire value chain.
